#CubsCollection: W Flag. The simplicity of a blue W on a white flag has become an enduring symbol of Cubs pride, but its origins date back over a century. When the Wrigley family owned the team in the 1920s, Catalina Island was the home of Cubs Spring Training. Players and fans were ferried to the facility by Wilmington Transport, whose ships flew a blue flag with a white W. The flag took on a new meaning in the 1930s when it began to fly atop the scoreboard after wins to alert El passengers of the outcome of the game. When Ernie Banks’ number was retired in 1982, he was honored with a white flag with blue pinstripes, prompting the color of the win flag to be changed to its current white background.
