Photo by @amivitale | A woman from the Mbororo community collects water near the village of Gouwa in Chad. As happens all over the world, the grueling task of fetching water falls to women and girls. They spend a collective 200 million hours each day doing it, and it's becoming increasingly difficult as climate change makes freshwater more scarce. Lake Chad, a critical freshwater resource on which 30 million people, including the Mbororo, depend upon for water and food, has shrunk by 90% since 1960, in part due to the warming climate. Its depletion is driving conflict and making the lives of women increasingly difficult.
However, many are working tirelessly to help. The 2019 Pritzker Environmental Genius Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim is creating 3D maps of remaining water resources in the area that can be shared among communities, so that those who need water can find it. We will need more minds like Hindou's if we are to overcome the myriad challenges climate change is bringing.
