James Baldwin makes an important point. People always say, things are better than they used to be and they’ll get even better with time. Just be patient. That in itself is a privilege and easier for some to say than others.
The woman in the second video was accosted by police for not wearing her mask properly. She was subsequently brought to the ground, arrested in front of her kid who was immediately taken from her.
Just a few miles away in the white part of town a number of people gathered in a park. You can see the difference, I don’t need to spell it out.
Like Baldwin I’m also fed up. How long do we have to wait for things to change when so many can’t even acknowledge that white privilege exists? It’s so obvious. This doesn’t mean white people don’t struggle to make ends meet. That just because you’re white everything is going to be easy for you. That you don’t have to work and toil. It means that the system, in general, treats you different. It treats you better.
This post is not for the ignorant, racist types who will undoubtedly come comment about how stupid I am and how I don’t know what I’m talking about and how blacks commit more crimes and a whole bunch of other BS propaganda. Those folks are too steeped in their own insecurity and ignorance. They are a lost cause.
This is for the people who see the difference between the woman in the subway and the folks in the park and know that it’s f*cked up. People will say I’m virtue signaling but one of the main purposes of social media is to share your lifestyle with others. I try to make myself an ally. I acknowledge my white privilege, and attempt to use my voice to speak about it. I follow activists (and would be happy to share them with you) and keep up to date on current issues in regards to social justice and inequalities. I sign petitions and am always ready to call a governor, prosecutor, or whoever I have to when the need arises. I donate to causes I believe in. I could do more, I’m still figuring out how.
