A red, white, and blue #Dbacks Insider.

While we strive to keep our cover photoshoots as “au naturel” as possible, sometimes post-production magic is a must when it comes to making an image work. In 2016, we decided to piggyback on the upcoming Summer Olympics by doing a theme issue highlighting past and present Olympians with Arizona ties. Luckily a group of those local medal winners were coming to Chase Field to throw out a ceremonial first pitch for one of our games, making a perfect opportunity to arrange for an Insider cover photoshoot with a few of them and their Olympic hardware. Obviously, every Insider cover has a D-backs tie-in, and this one was no different. In attendance was D-backs alum and 1996 USA Baseball bronze medalist Augie Ojeda, as well as Phoenix Suns great, 1988 USA Basketball bronze medalist and longtime D-backs supporter Dan Majerle. We just had one problem. “Thunder Dan” didn’t have his medal with him. But thankfully, 1988 USA Hurdling gold medalist Roger Kingdom did. Using a medal from our D-backs Race Against Cancer as a temporary stand-in prop during the group photo, Kingdom graciously allowed us to photograph his gold medal and its ceremonial ribbon so our creative team could doctor Majerle’s in post-production. We then used Augie’s medal to sync up the color hue, turning gold to bronze and completing the effect. So while the finished product was technically not Majerle’s actual Olympic medal, it was from the right year, it was bronze, and most importantly, it was perfect.
