Today we’re tipping our hat to Hawai’ian cowboys.
While the image of the cowboy is most commonly associated with the American west, cattle ranching was a key part of Hawaii’s economy and society. Men who worked cattle ranches were often known as “paniolo.” This hat belonged to Masatsu “Masa” Kawamoto, a paniolo, born on the Big Island in 1923. A life-long rancher, Kawamoto worked at Hawaii’s Parker Ranch—the second largest cattle ranch in the United States—before owning his own ranch.
