James Brown stopped violent riots with his concert in Boston. MLK had just been assassinated and the mayor wanted to cancel the concert, but instead they agreed to do it and broadcast it live. There was some pandemonium during the show but James stepped in and reprimanded the kids storming the stage with a paternal sternness and got everyone to return to their seats. He then proceeded to hypnotize the nation with an hour and a half of songs about love and unity and his lion-like presence. Historians agree that if it had not been aired and kept people at home, many more people would have died in riots. I empathize with Malcom X’s philosophy of fighting fire with fire, but ultimately the most positive change in the world has come from stoic agents of peace, like Ghandi and MLK and musicians like James Brown winning the culture war by uniting demographics. ✊🏽
