🧠 Everything that is going on in the world, namely the injustice, reminded me of John Rawls’ social contract theory. I first read about him as a freshman in college. I thought I’d share what’s on my mind rather than post another selfie.

Thought experiment 💡: Imagine yourself behind a veil of ignorance. Behind this veil, you know nothing of yourself and your natural abilities or your position in society. You don't know anything of your sex, race, nationality, or inclinations. Behind such a veil of ignorance, all individuals are simply specified as rational, free, and morally equal beings. But you do know that in the "real world” there will be a wide variety in the distribution of assets and abilities and that there will be differences of sex, race, and culture that will distinguish groups of people from each other. Not knowing one's ultimate position in society would lead to the creation of a just system, because the decision-maker would not want to make decisions that benefit a particular group at the expense of another, because the decision-maker could theoretically end up in either group: the advantaged or disadvantaged. In other words, if you didn’t know your race, skin color, social position, sex, or culture, how would you create/select the distribution of rights, positions, and resources in society? Not knowing how it would affect you, we would all choose the most fair laws and policies that would yield equal opportunity to all men ever of x society.

A social contract such as the “veil of ignorance” would ensure that everyone is guaranteed their maximum freedoms and equal opportunities to prosper. Given our reality, Rawls social theory may seem ideological.

Racial segregation in schools is growing faster in Minneapolis than in most places in the country. African-Americans earn one-third as much as white residents. They graduate from high school at much lower rates, are much likelier to be unemployed and tend to live in households with significantly less wealth than their white counterparts. Those disparities, the result of generations of discriminatory government policies, are now helping to fuel an uprising in the wake of Floyd’s death.
