This is Asher and I at our first 4 Continents Championships and, eight years later, we found ourselves in a broadcast booth together at CBC and now co-hosting #ThatFigureSkatingShow. . But this post isn't about that or me. It's about the relentless racism and injustices happening in the world. All over the news we see horrible things happening to people because of the colour of their skin. Unthinkable horrors that are SHOCKINGLY frequent. This is woven into our societal fabric. How do I know this? Because it has been happening THROUGHOUT history and is STILL HAPPENING NOW! Because it happens all around us and most of the time we don't even notice or give it any deep thought. White privilege is real and it's something that I am ashamed to say I hadn't thought about deeply enough. It isn't enough that I accept people in spite of, and because of, their differences. There have been times that I've been silent when I should have spoken up. Looking back now I realize how much of a tip-toed dance we do in social situations to avoid being "that person" and "going there.” We don't address the difficult things for fear of being ostracized...that too is white privilege. This great man is one of a few black skaters who competed at the international level and I rarely allowed myself to REALLY think about how they felt about it or had been treated. We become so accustomed to the way things are that we don't question if they are right. . Enough is enough. I'm speaking up for those who are oppressed. I'm speaking up for those who feel fear because of the colour of their skin. Every act of racial violence affects every person from that community. It is not enough to NOT be racist. EVERYONE must start speaking up and becoming an activist in order for us to see real change. . If you wouldn't allow someone you love to be treated a certain way, then you shouldn't let them treat any innocent person or living creature in the same manner. So speak up! You have a voice and a platform to do so. Speak up because racism can only be solved by taking a stand against hate, greed and oppressive entitlement...and it's everywhere.」5月30日 1時02分
