Posted @withregram • @nobelprize_org A total solar eclipse on 29 May 101 years ago proved a perfect opportunity to test Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity. Sir Arthur Eddington performed the first experimental test by measuring the positions of the stars and photographing the eclipse. Observations from an island off the west coast of Africa confirmed the theories prediction of the bending of light around the Sun. Einstein became famous overnight.
Einstein was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, not for his theory of general relativity but for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.
