Nicholas Johnson is the first black valedictorian of Princeton University, one of America's oldest higher education institutions. "Particularly given the university's historical ties to slavery, I think being the first black valedictorian is an extremely significant event," he tells @katiecouric. "The fact that it has taken so long for there to be a black valedictorian also speaks to how much work still needs to be done," Johnson adds. "Ideally we need to strive for a world where this type of achievement is more normalized and doesn't make national news." During a virtual commencement address on May 31, Johnson hopes to inspire his classmates not to feel powerless as they enter a world made even more uncertain by the pandemic. “This too will pass,” he says, “just as many challenging events before us have passed.” Watch more at the link in bio.
