We all know that blatant racism and bigotry is disgusting and wrong. The frustrating part is challenging those who don’t consider themselves “racist”, but somehow don’t fully get why saying “All lives matter” is just that. It’s dismissive, ignorant, privileged, and shitty. I feel the pain, I want justice, and I want change, so I feel it’s mine and all of our responsibilities as humans, especially the white ones, to not only donate or sign petitions, but to educate ourselves, stand up against injustice, and have those uncomfortable conversations with people who think they “mean well” by valuing “all lives”, but are too privileged to understand why it’s painful and offensive for the black community to hear you say “all lives matter”. Yes, all lives matter. But all lives are not valued equally in this country, all lives are not in danger every time they’re pulled over, all lives are not systematically denied justice when they’re taken. Does standing up for black lives somehow threaten your own?
