It is a philosophy rooted in Buddhism, the religion of my ancestors. It does not mean you cannot defend yourself against the initiation of force, it means initiating violence against the innocent is wrong—the Golden Rule, or ‘do unto others’ also allows for self defense. Don’t be afraid to speak for non-violence. It does not mean you don’t support those who are oppressed, angry, or suffering. It simply means you do not believe hurting the innocent will solve any problems, and that it will only make those problems bigger. History is littered with examples of violent revolutions that did more harm than good, (the Bolsheviks, the Maoists), and inversely it is littered with examples of revolutions that were won non-violently, (Gandhi, King, Rosa Parks). I do not believe you can dismiss the philosophy of non-violence by saying ‘you’re the wrong race’ or ‘you’re the wrong class’ or ‘you just don’t get it.’ Buddhism and ‘do unto others’ are rooted in some of humanity’s greatest achievements, you can’t write them off with what are ultimately superficial observations. Police violence is wrong, government violence is wrong, and civilian violence is also wrong.
