Growing up, this beautiful, motivated, intelligent, kind, funny, inspirational, strong, determined, and loving Black Man laid the groundwork for my outlook on life. He taught me that who I am as a person is more important than my skin color. He taught me that love conquers all and that no one wins when hatred is spread. I’m so proud of the person my dad is and the example that he has set for me and my sisters. He’s never been afraid to go after what he wants, no matter what obstacles he has had to overcome to get where he is. This mentality is a beautiful one, and it breaks my heart that as a human race it is not the way in which we all think. In the past few years the crimes against black lives that have been brought to light are absolutely unjust, disgusting, and heart wrenching. It’s even more upsetting to think about the instances that we haven’t heard about. It’s easy to be so outraged when physical injustice occurs, but I think and hope that people are beginning to realize that the smaller moments where racism rears its ugly head, are moments that also need to be addressed, because those moments build and are what gets us to where we are right now. I believe that we will one day get to a better place and I’m thankful that the world seems to be listening. It will be a beautiful world when mothers no longer have to explain to their black sons why they can’t do or say certain things out of fear for their lives.
