For #VolunteersWeek we're celebrating the extraordinary contribution of Tate's volunteers who give their time, passion and expertise to our visitors from across the globe. They bring the galleries to life and Tate wouldn't be the same without them.⁣

While the galleries are closed, our volunteers are sharing an artwork that still feels close to them. Today's pick is by @TateExchange volunteer and artist @tobialexandrafalade.

'The first time I saw Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s artwork, I felt instantly at home. I smiled as I recognised objects like the kerosene lamp, bright primary-coloured flasks and coolers, and photographs of family members. A scene that is familiar to me growing up in Nigeria during the mid 90s-early noughties.⁣ Crosby’s 'Predecessors' is my favourite work from Tate's collection. The imagery is rich and full of meaning. The hairstyle and clothing of the figure are subtle markers encompassing information about her class, heritage and culture, which could be recognised by someone from a similar background. In this way, the work joins people from across worlds, oceans and nations together—raising feelings, experiences and memories we didn’t know we shared with others.⁣

Important for me is Crosby’s goal to create a world, a space where she can suit the complexity of all her life experiences as a person straddling two cultures, being Nigerian and American. Crosby remarks, "I want to put the viewer in this space of confluence, of multiple things …It is this space where disparate elements come together, and the new space that comes out isn’t just this plus this—it’s like a whole new identity".

In a similar way, it is not my aim for us as a society to ‘go back to normal’ as we come out of COVID-19, but rather to come out with a new identity. An identity of people that will continually speak out and not stay neutral in situations of injustice, such as the racism and oppression of black communities around the world. Allies that listen, learn and use their privilege to bring systemic change. We can activate spaces, such as @TateExchange where I volunteer—a place for all to play, create, reflect and question what art can mean to our everyday.'
