Bessie Stringfiled was the first black woman to ride across the United States solo and was also one of the few civilian motorcycle dispatch riders for the US Army during World War II. She was born in 1911 in North Carolina. She was a motorcycle nurse, housekeeper and courier. Due to her skin color Springfield was often denied accommodation while traveling and would sleep on her motorcycle at filing stations. Due to her sex she was refused prizes in the flat track races she entered. During WWII she served as a civilian courier for the US army carrying documents between domestic army bases. Springfield kept riding until the time of her death in 1993.
