I'm glad this Structural Oppression and Racism/Individual Racism breakdown was helpful. Please note that this was my experience - from interactions with my students, from attending court hearings, and from my experience with peers. The more time I spent with my students, the more I saw the deep levels of despair. They know that in the eyes of law enforcement, the court system, and society - forgiveness and a second chance does not exist in their world. A system that prides itself on the principle of innocent until proven guilty sees them as guilty from the start. And their deep sense of despair manifests in different ways. I had a student who could not sleep because he saw the grim reaper every night, a student who imagines himself as different characters to escape the poverty and abuse of his home life, a student who misses his mom dearly, and I can go on. This structural oppression is very complex and it comes in many forms - limited opportunities; different treatment by law enforcement, employers, teachers, strangers; making up a disproportionate share of Covid-19 fatalities; being left out of PPP loans, and more. Combine this with interpersonal levels of racism, the world becomes an unjust place. But we can change this. And the change must start now.」6月5日 10時48分 - wendyslookbook
