I worked in Alabama last year and came here to this memorial to see what white people have been doing to black people. I imagined myself as a person living every day in a world where white people could decide to kill you just because it made them feel powerful. I look again at these monoliths, each one representing a US state, inscribed with the names of people who were murdered because they were black and I know there were so many more lynchings that were not documented. But the thing that terrified me most was that the reason there are big walls around this memorial is because white people drive by and fire bullets at the guards that work there, at the people who come to pay their respect and mourn. .
I still don’t understand why. .
.
My heart is very full. I hope that black history becomes part of the curriculum in all schools worldwide and that we never forget. I hope that we learn that we have to stand up together against what is wrong because we can change the future. We are already changing the future.
