Some of you might know Jeanie Annan-Lewin from her instagram @jeanieus curating ideas and imagery
Some of you who work in fashion in London from her work as a stylist, who has styled for titles such as i-D as well as shows like @yuhanwangyuhan ‘s first Fashion East outing
-
I’ve known Jeanie for well over a decade, from our blogger 1.0 days when she was assisting and writing her blog Fat Fashion Assistant and me on Style Bubble
-
Scrolling back on our DM’s and re-reading some of the conversations we have had in the past relating to diversity in fashion, one comment has always stuck with me “How can you put black rappers on your covers when 80% (of your masthead) are from Hampshire."
-
Meaning, how can we as a fashion industry hypocritically take from black culture and talent without lifting them up behind the scenes. It sums up the dichotomy of an industry that lauds itself and pats itself on the back, when ONE black designer makes it as creative director or when ONE black stylist covers Vogue Italia but they are exceptions, not the norm. And in studios, ateliers, media companies, magazines and brands where there are a myriad of roles across the fashion industry, you’ll find the percentage of employees who are BIPOC staggeringly low. And anecdotally speaking, next to none
-
And so Jeanie and I decided to record this conversation - to open it up beyond DM's and speak frankly. It lasted over two hours, and I've cut down to one, to split into three parts on IGTV. I tried to edit it down further but Jeanie made so many salient points and stated so many much-needed truths that need to be heard, that it was impossible to get it any shorter
-
Jeanie talks about her experiences of an industry where she had the dream start, working at Tatler, with Isabella Blow championing her as a fashion assistant and then moving on to assist Katie Grand, to then repeatedly knocking on doors of magazines only to find them close, despite her impressive CV
-
She isn’t an exception but one of many that are knocking on doors that are closing. Or when they open, it’s only to make a marquee hiring gesture that doesn’t tell the whole story of the industry
