When Makeda Davis left Bedford Hill Correctional Facility in 2018 after seven and a half years incarcerated, she had a lot to catch up on—and many obstacles to face.

People of color are disproportionately imprisoned: Black people are imprisoned at more than five times the rates of whites. Black women are imprisoned twice as much as white women.

Makeda compares prison life to “a plantation,” and says reentry programs offer way too little. “Most people are going back into society, so why create an atmosphere where the people are leaving here worse than they came in?” Marie Claire joined Makeda for her first day out of prison and followed up with her throughout her first year out. Link in bio for her story.
