Today is World Oceans Day, a reminder of the importance of conserving and maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem. At times, the ocean may seem so vast that one might think that it’s invulnerable, but did you know that the ocean currently holds about 50 times more carbon dioxide and 1,000 times more heat than the atmosphere? The ocean helps control climate by acting as a control knob, absorbing or releasing carbon and heat in response to changes in the atmosphere. Our habits on land are recorded in the oceans, too. Around 150 million tons of plastic have accumulated in the ocean—that’s 80 times the weight of all blue whales today. And 90% of seafood stocks are now fully fished or overfished. But we can turn the tide by passing laws that limit future ocean warming and designate more marine protected areas. With around 7.6 billion of us on Earth, individual efforts also add up; choose sustainable seafood, take part in beach sweeps, and vote for leaders who make evidence-based decisions.
