We often forget that Pride also began as a demonstration.⠀ ⠀ In June of 1969, a six-day protest occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. ⠀ ⠀ Two of the most prominent figures in this uprising were Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Both were transgender women of color who became important gay liberation activists and fought for LGBTQ+ rights. Marsha’s dream was, “...to see gay people liberated and free and to have equal rights that other people have in America.”⠀ ⠀ There is still so much to be done to make her dream a reality, but those six days of rioting were the catalyst for huge changes that have been made in the decades that followed.
