Adopting a deaf dog can seem intimidating to some. I think one of the biggest concerns people have is “recall”. (come when called) Once her OCD subsided, teaching BB “recall” wasn’t so difficult. Many deaf dogs get very attached to their human and prefer to stay close to her.
When I took BB to a fenced park for the first time, I played hide and seek from her. (Part of my training) When she couldn’t find me, she panicked and searched for me. When she found me behind a tree, I gave her everything I could—affection, treats and play. We did that several more times and she figured out the game. She learned to check in with me on our walks frequently after that. As a maintenance, I still reward her intermittently when she checks back.
