Nomads and yaks: summer pasturing at 17,000 feet near the Mekong’s headwaters means being prepared for sudden snowfalls. The yak, though, is ideally adapted to the high altitude and low temperatures, as evidenced by this ice-encrusted yak being milked — one of the first chores of the day for the drokpa (Tibetan for nomad). Yaks are essential to the livelihood of Tibetan nomads, providing milk, meat, dung for cooking fires, and skins for clothing and shelter. Inside a Tibetan tent, made of hand-woven yak hair, it’s dark and smokey but also warm and cozy. Rain resistant and strong, the tent’s centerpiece is the stove where a pot of yak butter tea is almost always brewing. #mekongriver #mekong #tibet #qinghai #tibetannomads #drokpa #tibetanplateau.
