Like the "Civil Tapestry" series, for which Theaster Gates became known, "A Mangled Passing" incorporates decommissioned municipal fire hoses as a semantic reminder of the struggles of Black Americans. The seemingly anodyne form belies its offensive role in such events as the infamous 1963 student march in Birmingham, Alabama, where law enforcers used high-pressure hoses to break up peaceful demonstrations. Throughout his work, Gates underscores the ongoing struggle for Black civil rights, and in doing so confronts the misconception that this tumultuous era of American history might be at an end.
