As it follows its 2600 mile journey to the sea, the river runs through valleys and gorges plunging ever downwards. In sparsely populated northern Yunnan, the Mekong drops an incredible 15,000 feet, making it a formidable obstacle to cross. Bridges are few and far-between, so the most common method of crossing is by zip line — a single strand of cable strung at a steep angle over the river.
