Photo by David Guttenfelder @dguttenfelder | A pump jack bobs in a cotton field near Lubbock, Texas, at the northern edge of the Permian Basin. Fracking of deep shales allowed this region to pump more than one-third of U.S. crude in 2019. Production is expected to increase, even though greenhouse gas emissions must be slashed.
I crossed the U.S. in an electric car with writer @craigwelch to try to understand the future of energy for our story, “The Road to 2070.” Please have a look at the April 2020 issue of National Geographic, which marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
