Although sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, mass anti-racism demonstrations around the United Kingdom have gone beyond solidarity with Black Americans. For many in the crowds, there is also an overdue reckoning for Britain. "The U.K. is not innocent," goes a regular chant. Justice for Floyd has been demanded alongside justice for Belly Mujinga, a Black transport worker who died of COVID-19 in April after being spat on at a train station. “I’m here," reads one sign held at a recent protest, "because racism is a bigger threat than COVID."
