Erhai Lake translates to “ear shaped sea,” as the view from the surrounding mountains might suggest. It is the second largest alpine lake in China and a major feeder to the Mekong, it’s waters draining into the Lancang Jiang at the lake’s outlet on it’s southern shore. Once an important food source, it is famous for the local traditional fishing methods, using trained cormorants to hunt for fish. Rings are fixed around the bird’s necks so they can only swallow the smallest sized ones. The birds then dive and return their unswallowable catches to their masters boats for which they are rewarded with a smaller fish to eat. Now a popular tourist area, the lake has been plagued by pollution, lowering its fish stocks. But since fisherman are finding it more lucrative to perform their unique style of fishing for tourists than to actually catch fish for sustenance, only the fishermen and their unusual technique are in danger of disappearing. #erhailake #mekong #yunnan #cormorantfishing #lancang
