Today’s #MondayBlues is a special one. I was 14 and in Philly when Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes released If You Don’t Know Me By Now. I wore it out. I couldn’t get enough of Teddy Pendergrass and his incredible voice. Written by Philly’s own Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, it seemed to me the perfect “breakup song.”
In this moving @ニューヨーク・タイムズ The Daily podcast episode, another Philadelphia native Wesley Morris highlights the live version recorded by another Philadelphia treasure and one of the best singers in music. Ever. @mspattilabelle
Listen to the podcast then listen to her version. Listen to her words during the breakdown and you will never hear the song the same way again. Link in bio.
