I see so many in her. Myself, my nieces, all of my sisters. I see her deep beauty. I see her pain. Black women have been marketed as the strong one, the mother of all, the universe carriers, the protectors. And yet the constant societal neglect of our lives, health, bodies, and cries tells another story. One that has me terrified of becoming pregnant because I know the mortality rate of black mothers. One that has us speaking up and fighting for ourselves, that has this young queen LITERALLY tweeting out the abuse to only be disbelieved or dismissed. My throat hurts. My voice is shaky. I’ve the energy of two and yet I’m fully exhausted. I’m tired of being twice as good to get half as far. I’m tired of being the last one seen but the first one shouting. If you see a Black woman today, or can reach out to one (that you know personally, please leave us to ourselves otherwise) love on her a little bit. And if you are a Black woman, know that I love you so purely. I know it’s hard. I know we feel lonely in this fight sometimes. But we will always have each other. And for everyone else, believe us when we shout. Because for far too long Black women have been the canary in the coal mine. And the walls are tumbling down. 🖤 #JusticeForToyin #OluwatoyinSalau
