Hey there, everyone! It's @urbanclimbr here and I'm taking over Alex's grams for few days. We've been thrilled to do it. I appreciate her kindness to lend me her platform. #Sharethemic #GetStoked.
.
I'm a long-time climbing athlete and commercial photographer. I have a couple master degrees in urban planning and environmental design. With those, I've been able to work in innovation helping companies rethink the future when I'm not climbing. Everything started because I love being outside. With working in the outdoor industry and innovation, I wanted to share my experience as person of color and illuminate structural racism:
.
.
Being of the Few // Often people see me as one of the few, an exception. And it's honestly unfortunate. That's the issue with structural racism— just a few of us get let in. And a lot of us get left back starting from an early age. And when you're let you in, don't for one second think it's always welcomed. For many, it's peppered with micro-aggressions.
.
.
As I look around at my black peers in the outdoors and in business, there's often an educational elitism, an exceptionalism that pervades for us. You must code switch and carry cultural capitol for your white peers. The moniker of 'black excellence' highlights the deeply entrenched exceptionalism that's necessary to succeed as a professional. Being so so visible, we know being black & average can't fly like white & mediocre.
.
.
At the last 2 firms I worked at, nearly every black person (the 1-3% there) had an Ivy League degree, multiple degrees, or both (in my case). It seemed essential for us to be there, but quite non-essential for our counterparts. That's just a small example of structural racism. Having to come to the table extra qualified and still questioned. Having to change your name to get interviews like I did and much more.
.
.
I recognize that my education, my ability to code switch, and my overt politeness are reasons why people work with me. The first brand I ever worked with talked about my education constantly. I fit a mold they can understand. I hope we can continue to look critically and elevate us all, not the few. #AmplifyMelanatedVoices
