The 2014 video, “The Living Need Light, The Dead Need Music,” connects New Orleans and Saigon—the place called home by The Propeller Group.

In this work, the artist collective pairs brass bands and public processions, which come together in both cities to honor those who have recently passed.

The film offers parallels between public mourning rituals in both places as “space[s] of resistance,” Andrew Tuan Nguyen, a member of the artist collective, recently said. “Across time and place,” our curator @thomaslax reflects, “public grief is a common need, even as loss remains unevenly distributed.” Read more at the link in our bio.
