I used to believe that I am one of the lucky ones. Pretty solid career. A woman over 40. My goodness, it is dismal how little I have come to expect. But I am not lucky. I have made a career out of making your stories a little more “sassy” and “strong” and my all time favourite, “soulful”. You are the lucky one. For over 20 years, I have almost exclusively facilitated YOUR storylines. A box to check. The character that allows woke writers to feel even more awake. And then for 12.5% of the time you allow me to have a last name and maybe participate in a scene or two that isn’t totally about you. Now, I have been complicit to some degree. For I have told your stories well. Exceptionally well, if I dare say. We all have. But I’m over it. You need to do better. And I need to get louder at calling out the staggering inequalities that occur, both in front of and behind the camera. So start here. Does your current project pass this test?
