It hurt to see reoccurring imagery of despair of people who looked like me. I wanted to interject our joy and show us being care-free. I started with just myself and my brother on our outdoor trips, and then I brought my camera out climbing. I wanted to show others that there is a space for them outside, make the outdoors feel warm and accessible to people who haven't felt welcomed. ​⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣I'm very inspired by the great athlete/photographers. I'd like to do expeditions too. But when I look to the outdoor world, it over-indexes on summit culture. I aspire to highlight not only how badass people are but their happiness while there. It's powerful to see. It's what I seek from everyone I capture, especially people of color. When I finally was able to buy a used camera in graduate school a few years ago, I thought showing outdoor joy could be a way to contribute in a special way with intention. ​⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣Being joyful is an act of resistance. My visuals show people reclaiming spaces that were often never meant for them, where they haven't felt invited or included. It's important to know that.
