JUNETEENTH: Juneteenth (June 19th) is an annual celebration for the end of slavery in the US. The holiday commemorates this day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Texas to ensure ALL enslaved people were freed - despite the fact the Emancipation Proclamation was two and half years prior. It has become a symbolic date that represents “nobody is free until everybody is freed.” Even though Juneteenth marked when the last enslaved learned they were free, we are still seeing the social and economic impact of slavery today.
