Traveling provides me the space to exercise my own freedom — no matter the destination, I can embark on a journey of my choice and unlock endless possibilities created by my own intent.
It has given me the opportunity to gain an understanding & appreciation for different cities, countries and cultures – but it also means that, at times, I find myself being the first Black person someone has encountered outside of television & magazines.
In these situations (usually in small, rural cities) I receive intense stares; I can feel their eyes explore the color of my skin and watch them visually touch the texture of my hair with their pupils. Some even point with their fingers. It can be quite overwhelming and uncomfortable.
In moments like these I remind myself that traveling is two-sided and rooted in understanding. Not only am I fortunate to increase my global awareness by taking in new experiences, but traveling provides a sacred opportunity to share my identity & culture with the world.
