It dates back to 1865 when Union soldiers marched to Galveston, Texas to announce the war had ended and the slaves were freed. This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect! Moreover, this holiday signifies the delay in freedoms that Black people experience to this day. I don’t know about you, but we didn’t learn about this holiday in my middle school history class. I’ve been coming to terms with just how much we are not taught about Black history and the history of the civil rights movement. So I’m spending today with my business closed in observation of Juneteenth, studying and taking in all I can. Meanwhile, here are some things we can all do today:⁣ ⁣ -Educate yourself on the history of Juneteenth (see my stories for resources)⁣ -Sign a petition to tell congress to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday (see stories) ⁣ -Inform others around you of Juneteenth’s significance and encourage them to celebrate it the way they would another major National Holiday)⁣ -Buy from Black owned businesses (linking current faves in my stories!)⁣ -Celebrate by joining a local protest or celebration (also, linked in stories)⁣ ⁣ All lives don’t matter until Black lives matter. #blacklivesmatter #defundthepolice #juneteenth」6月20日 2時21分
