On June 19, 1865 union soldiers marched into Galveston, Texas announcing that slavery was over. This was TWO YEARS after the Emancipation Proclamation declared all enslaved Africans “shall be free”. On this BLACK holiday we celebrate and honor our ancestors who fought for freedom. May we continue to honor them knowing that they did not push to reform slavery, but instead ABOLISHED it. This is OUR freedom day and may we never forget our power as a people.
