Diego, a libidinous giant tortoise credited with saving his species from extinction, has finally retired to an uninhabited island off the coast of Ecuador after spending decades in a breeding program where he produced around 800 offspring. "Fifteen tortoises from Española, including Diego, are going home after decades of breeding in captivity and saving their species from extinction," Paulo Proaño Andrade, Ecuador's environment minister wrote on Monday. Diego and the other tortoises helped bring the population of their species from 14 to over 2,000.
