In 1931, Daniel Swarovski developed and patented a ribbon adorned with crystals. This new ribbon, known today as trimming, meant crystals were set in plastic instead of metal, then attached to a flexible ribbon—one that allowed for easier, quicker application of crystals to dresses, shoes and bags.
