Propelled by Creative Director @alessandro_michele’s meditations on society, the exhibit proposes a new definition of what an “other space” might be: a place to build a different, desirable future with new ways for humans to relate to each other and to their surroundings. Every project is thematically tied to the idea of the alternative spaces as a utopian place in which to set new empowering narratives, dwelling on the understanding of otherness, the exploration of minoritarian identities and queer politics. The acknowledgment of the moment of great uncertainty that humanity is currently experiencing now furtherly encourages reflections on alternative modes of being and consuming in relation to one’s environment. “It seemed very clear to me that as an outsider, the most relevant thing wouldn’t be to do something about the Korean scene, but really with Korean cultural producers,” said curator Myriam Ben Salah @myriambensalah—recently appointed Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago @rensoc. #NoSpaceJustAPlace features independent and alternative art spaces as well as international artists’ works including #MartineSyms’ video installation ‘Notes on Gesture’ (image 1), @oliviaerlanger’s ‘Ida, Ida, Ida!’ (image 2), Kang Seung Lee @kangseunglee’s wallpaper installation ‘Covers (QueerArch)’ and @meriembennani’s ‘Party on the CAPS’ (Image 4).
