A Catholic Church in a tiny Tibetan village high up on the banks of the Mekong River? This unlikely location is in the village of Cizhong in Yunnan province built by French and Swiss Jesuit priests more than 150 years ago. In 1951 the last foreign priests were expelled from the country by Mao's government as religion was no longer tolerated in the newly formed state. The church of Cizhong was left to its fate and was later mostly destroyed by Mao's Red Guard. Renovated in the 1980’s, most of Cizhong’s Tibetan residents (80%) remained faithful to their Christian beliefs and now celebrate mass every Sunday presided over by a Chinese priest. In addition to the Christian services, the Catholic priests cultivated grapes producing French wine in Cizhong continuing to this day. The taste? It is not Bordeaux or Burgundy - more like grape juice with alcohol. #cizhong #mekongriver #lancangjiang #catholicchurch
