Thanks to @toyota and @nbcsports tonight I watched the 2016 men’s @usparalympics wheelchair basketball gold medal game ON T.V. (spoiler alert* They got that GOLD) . . That may not seem like a big deal to most of you. But for me and my fellow Paralympians, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MONUMENTAL. . . Back in the day, September 2008, after an epic experience in Beijing going undefeated into the tournament, the US Women won GOLD!! . . I’ll never forget when me and my teammate Patty landed in the US from Beijing, pushing our ball chairs through the airport, we started chatting with some flight attendants that were walking next to us. They asked us where we were coming from and we exclaimed “we just won gold at the Paralympics in Beijing!” To which the attendants said something along the lines of “wow thats great that you competed in the special olympics”. You could almost audibly hear our hearts deflate. They had absolutely no idea what we were doing over there. Patty went on to tell me that’s what’s called “Paralympic Let down”. . . When you work equally as hard and sacrifice equally as much and have dreams equally as big as Olympians and then you don’t get the credit- that’s Paralympic Let down. . . Yesterday was the first ever, in history, #OlympicParalympicday which is also seemingly not a big deal but for Paralympians that equality and representation means the world. Today I watched the sport that I love and that turned my life around after my accident, on T.V. . . Young girls and women with disabilities are surely watching and inspired and have hope and goals that they can see... on TV! . . Thank you @toyotausa for knowing how important this is.
