Since then, Chen has been doing everything she can to avoid similar situations. "The other day, I walked 40 blocks to avoid taking the bus or the subway. I'd rather be out in the open where I can run away if I have to," she says. In recent weeks, Chen says older family members have told her not to involve herself in "Black-white battles."
