Aujourd’hui, « Le sommeil de Titania » de Richard Dadd ! 🔎 - ✍️ Le sujet de ce tableau est tiré du Songe d'une nuit d'été de Shakespeare (Acte 2, sc. 2). La scène montre Obéron, roi des fées, jaloux de sa femme Titania. Pour la faire souffrir, il fait verser sur ses paupières le suc magique d'une plante qui, à son réveil, la rendra amoureuse de la première créature entrevue. Ce sera un tisserand balourd et stupide, Bottom, qui, par magie, a une tête d'âne. - 🌪 Le tableau est conçu comme un tourbillon s'enroulant de l'entrée de la cave jusqu'aux figures dansantes sur la gauche. La composition extrêmement dense donne l'impression d'un microcosme. L'oeuvre est conçue comme une scène de théâtre avec son rideau de scène en forme de chauve-souris. 🦇 - 🧚‍♂️ Ce tableau fut présenté à l'exposition de la Royal Academy où il obtint un réel succès. Oberon, king of the fairies, is jealous of his wife Titania. He wants to see her suffer and so squeezes the juice of a magical plant over her eyelids while she sleeps so that she falls in love with the first creature she sees when she awakes-the stupid, oafish weaver Bottom, who has magically been given the head of an ass. - 🌪 The painting is dominated by a sort of maelstrom or cornucopia reaching from the entrance of the cave to the figures dancing on the left. The composition is extremely dense, giving the impression of a microcosm. The layout of the piece is similar to that of a stage, with a curtain of bats. - 🧚‍♂️ The painting was first shown at a Royal Academy exhibition, where it was hailed as a great success.
