Photo by Robin Hammond @Hammond_Robin | “We are so far from the hospitals, and so can’t walk there because if you do, you can be stoned to death.” I met Kuteesa, a transgender woman and refugee from Uganda, in 2017 at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya. “Everywhere you go, people ridicule you, and we are so misery now.” The camp is an inhospitable place for everyone, but for LGBTQI+ refugees, attacked by the local population, other refugees, and even camp management, it is extremely dangerous. A couple months after this picture was taken, Kuteesa was badly beaten. She was lucky to survive. June is Pride month—a time to celebrate LGBTQI+ communities around the world. It marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots of 1969, which changed “gay rights” for people in the U.S. and beyond. Transgender people of color were at the forefront of the riots. Around the world, they are still fighting, literally for their lives. #BlackTransLivesMatter. For more stories of survival go to @whereloveisillegal.
