I was fortunate to try out the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III camera to shoot the end of the pro playoffs. The camera’s performance blew me away. The AF was the best I have ever seen in a DSLR and the files were beautiful. The EF 200-400 f4 IS USM lens I was using for this shoot was perfect for this situation. I was able to frame each play whether it was a short pass over the middle or a long one. During the games I always shoot looking through the viewfinder, but for this shoot I put the camera in Live View and used a Hooploupe attached to the LCD screen. I set the AF on Wide Zone Horizontal, turned on face and helmet detection and eye detection (which is only available in Live View). The AF performance was stunning. Shooting Live View can be a little cumbersome, unless your camera is on a tripod (which are not allowed at most sporting events), but I still plan to try it this season, whenever that will be."
