Further, they are not always set up to easily report on disease data by race, gender or other demographics for vulnerable communities. This is a problem because without accurate data, we can’t see the full picture of what is happening and therefore can’t target prevention measures or respond as effectively. We are experiencing this now with #COVID19 on multiple fronts. The data that is finally now available in the US shows there is a disproportionate impact from COVID-19 on Black people and other communities of color in terms of cases and deaths. During epidemics, and COVID-19 is no exception ,we also see a follow-on effect on other health and economic issues when systems get overwhelmed. An example is during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the virus indirectly led to increased cases of malaria, measles, as well as maternal & child health issues. The world needs health systems to be resilient — to reach everyone, to mitigate impacts of epidemics and become stronger in the short, medium, and long-term. It’s a good lesson — when we strengthen a health system to fight one disease, we strengthen that system to fight all disease. And I’m optimistic that together the world can do the work needed to invest in systems that truly serve the most vulnerable.
