Stonewall was a riot. The first Pride was a riot. Queer Black and brown folks collectively resisted and disrupted police brutality and surveillance. Pride, like many movements, owes itself to those on the frontlines of struggles for liberation — Black and brown queer, trans, and GNC folks, like Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. The centers of our movements and struggles are those at the margins in everyday life due to the state-sanctioned and socially upheld status quo. As we fight, organize, and march for justice, we cannot leave Black queer, trans, and GNC lives out. The Black queer community is the most susceptible to state violence and patriarchal violence. The revolution must include and must defend ALL Black lives. Pride is about joy. Pride is about freedom. Pride is also about action. We must end profiling, criminalization, policing, and violence against Black trans and gender nonconforming people.
