In divisive remarks before a big, mostly maskless crowd at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota on July 3, President Trump accused protesters demanding racial justice of a "merciless campaign to wipe out our history," the Associated Press reports. "The president offered a discordant tone to an electorate battered by a pandemic and seared by the recent high-profile killings of Black people. He zeroed in on the desecration by some demonstrators of monuments and statues across the country that honor those who have benefited from slavery, including some past presidents." In these photographs: Marine One, carrying Trump, flies past Mount Rushmore; an attendee dressed as President Abraham Lincoln; activists and members of different tribes from the region block the road to Mount Rushmore during a protest against the monument; the President and First Lady Melania Trump arrive onstage; Trump is projected onscreen during his remarks; and the President looks up at fireworks.
